A great example of a Kampen schelling (1612–1619), bearing the unmistakable marks of its centuries-long immersion on the seabed. Both the obverse and reverse display subtle traces of saltwater corrosion and encrustations, evidence of its time underwater. Unlike most schelling coins recovered from the Merestein shipwreck, this remarkable piece shows an impressive level of detail. This is particularly notable considering the coin had already been in circulation for several decades before it found its way aboard this ill-fated Dutch East Indiaman.
