Arendschelling Kampen 1637-1657

This is a schelling from the Dutch Republic, minted in the city of Kampen. Both sides of the coin display areas of brown and black encrustation, adding to its maritime character. Having spent centuries submerged off the South African coast, the coin shows some signs of saltwater damage on both the obverse and reverse. Despite this, the piece remains in above-average condition for a schelling recovered from the Merestein wreck and stands as a tangible reminder of this historic maritime tragedy.
