This is a wonderful example of a schelling that was minted in the Dutch city of Kampen between 1612 and 1619. The coin displays some typical signs of circulation, which is unsurprising given that it had already been in use for more than half a century before sinking with the Dutch East Indiaman Merestein in 1702. Despite its age and underwater history, the coin remains in remarkable condition, especially when compared to most coins from the wreck, which often exhibit significant saltwater damage. This example shows only light traces of corrosion and boasts a stunning dark patina. Enhancing its historical allure are patches of dark encrustation, serving as tangible evidence of its time resting beneath the seabed.
