This exceptionally rare 1672 silver rider, featuring the “star after HOLL” type, was minted in the city of Amsterdam during the infamous Dutch Disaster Year (“Rampjaar”). Struck only in 1672-73 due to the temporary closure of the Holland mint in Dordrecht for strategic reasons, these coins are seldom seen. A testament to its fascinating history, both the obverse and reverse display traces of iron encrustation, serving as tangible evidence of its shipwreck origins. Adding to its character, the coin has a small split in the planchet from the strike, a unique feature that reflects the minting process of the era. Despite its journey through time, the coin retains sharp details and shows a stunning dark patina, making it a great addition to any advanced collection.
