Here we got a beautiful 1601 full-date schelling was minted in the province of Holland and had already circulated for over a century by the time the Merestein met its fate off the coast of South Africa in April 1702. Its slightly worn condition reflects its long history, yet the coin remains incredibly detailed. Enhancing its character is a striking dark blue patina visible on both sides, along with light traces of saltwater corrosion and intriguing spots of encrustation—subtle reminders of its time beneath the sea.
